Potential harm of Negative Publicity

Perhaps you have heard it said, 
"All publicity is good publicity."

Obviously this statement goes along with the premise that even negative publicity mentions you or your company so it only can only add to your overall popularity.

Below I will explain why, 

All search engine negative publicity is bad publicity.

Search Engine

Search engines have taken the world by storm. When someone wants information they almost unanimously go to one place - a search engine.

Why is a search engine different from other forms of media?

Because search engines are where people go to find something out. Almost like a huge virtual Library.

So, when someone visits a search engine and types in your name or your company name. They fit into one of two categories;

1) They are looking for your web site.
2) They want to find out more about you.

You can probably see the common denominator here. And that is that in either of those two categories 
they already know who you are! Or they would not be typing your name into a search engine.

So, in search engines negative publicity can only harm you because they are relaying negative information to people who already know you exist. 

When someone is looking for your web site and they see numerous other web sites speaking negatively about you they may choose not to visit, buy, etc. And when someone types your name into a search engine looking for more information about you and starts browsing through the negative sites they may choose not to contact you, form a relationship with you, etc.

Negative Publicity can have a disastrous effect on individuals and businesses. Some choose to ignore it. Unfortunately, negative publicity can be like a virus that continues to spread. Hence this quote from Winston Churchhill,

"A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a change to get its pants on."
