LinkedInMashable, Crunchbase, Twitter, and Facebook are just a few of the most popular social networking sites in the world. These five sites together power much of the viral ability and traffic pushing opportunities on the Internet.

These five will also rank high under the search results of any person or company!

LinkedIn is a social networking site which is based around a person's employment history and current work situation. It has been called the "resume of the Internet", and rightly so. If you have ever seen someone's LinkedIn profile, then you have probably seen their resume too.
LinkedIn is all about professional networking. The site, founded in December of 2002, and launched in May of 2003, has built up a massive membership in less than a decade since it started. LinkedIn has over 150 million users who have gone through the registration process in more than two-hundred countries. The website has been made available to users in languages ranging from English and French, obviously, to Japanese and Polish-plus several other languages. Over 45 million people visit LinkedIn each month worldwide. Reid Hoffman is the guiding light behind LinkedIn-he founded the company along with a team of professionals from Paypal and Socialnet.com. Hoffman is now the Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors and was previously the CEO. Now, Jeff Weiner is the CEO of LinkedIn. The company is headquartered in Mountain View, California, but has additional offices in Dublin, Omaha, Chicago, London, and New York. LinkedIn encourages its users to network with other professionals in order to further their careers.

Mashable is one of the largest websites on the Internet and probably the most underrated source for social media news. The company was founded in Aberdeen, Scotland, by Peter Cashmore in July 2005. Mashable gets over fifty million+ pageviews per month, which ranks it in the top two-hundred-and-fifty websites online. The website is available in either English or French and has offices in New York City, New York, and Palo Alto, California. The Mashable Awards are a ceremony run by Mashable that awards the best online communities and services on the web. If you are looking for news regarding social media, there really is no better resource.

CrunchBase is the wikipedia of the business world. What does this mean, exactly? It means that it is a wiki-based website through which users moderate, change, add, and edit information regarding various businesses, corporations, start-ups, and professionals. The CrunchBase contains information on over 90,000 companies and 120,000 professionals. This is an expansive database of unique information that is available on CrunchBase, with some it based exclusively on the website. CrunchBase also keeps track of funding, start-ups, acquisitions, funding rounds, and various other aspects of the business world. Anyone can edit CrunchBase articles on businesses and professionals, although obviously all articles are kept under some sort of authority. This means that often news about businesses, mergers, and acquisitions are first reported at CrunchBase.

Twitter is one of the most popular forms of social media these days. It is often referred to as micro-blogging because on Twitter a user can only send or publish messages that have 140 characters or less. Jack Dorsey is the founder and, there is only a "follow" system. This means you do not mutually agree to be friends with some Executive Chairman of the Board of Directors for Twitter, which is now a massive user base. Twitter was founded in March of 2006 and now has over 140 million active users. Over 340 million tweets, messages using under 140 characters, are sent on a daily basis. The website also handles over 1.6 billion search queries in a day. Twitter is based in San Francisco, but has another office in New York City, too. The company employs over 900 people and its yearly revenue is well over $140 million. It is a top ten website, globally, which means it pulls a ton of traffic. Inorder to properly use Twitter, one needs to be able to understand and use hashtags. These are essentially just sets of words which group your mass-message with others for people to read.
Twitter is unique in that there is not a "friend" system one. Rather, they follow you if they find your interesting and you may or may not follow them back. This might seem like a subtlety, but it makes a big difference when you are talking about the flow of conversation and the structure of the social network in question.

Facebook is of course the largest and most dominant social media tool on the planet. It is the single most successful online social network that exists. It is the second most popular website on the Internet, too, ranking only behind Google. Facebook drives more traffic than any other social networking website or platform, so it is important to businesses and other organizations. It's also important to individuals because of the potential for interpersonal connections and on-going communication. Facebook is a highly accomplished business and website with incredible market penetration. Facebook has over 900 million users, with one study showing that over forty percent of the population of the United States had an account.
There are seventy languages available on Facebook, ranging from Portuguese and Russian to Pirate and English. Mark Zuckerberg is the founder, starting the process of building Facebook.com February 4th, 2004. In less than eight years, Facebook has become the most dominant form of social media on the Internet by far. Using Facebook is fairly simple, you just set up an account and add your friends. There is a messenger, event-book, a way to play games with friends, and a system for commenting on messages which are visible to all of your friends. There is also a system for protecting privacy.
